I Passed the CIPP exam!!!

Hi Everyone,

Well, it took a little while but I just found out that I finally passed the CIPP exam!!! I am now officially a member of the privacy professional community!!!

For those of you keeping up, I have been posting about my experience studying for the exam. I honestly was not sure whether or not I had passed since some of the questions were more complicated than what I was expecting. I am fortunate that I had some background on various subjects and was able to utilize my legal education in determining the correct response. I think that I definitely benefited from having previous exposure to the topic, especially when the questions related to privacy laws and regulations.

I did best on the section dealing with Workplace Privacy, which was my least favorite topic. It was more relevant to professionals dealing with Human Resources than anything that I enjoy learning. I performed worse on one of my favorite sections: Web Privacy and Security. I enjoyed immensely learning about the various ways that data protection collected from the internet needs to be protected and stored. I am definitely going to pursue further education on this topic and it is a very complex issue that requires a technical and legal background to properly understand.

My certification is good for three year and I have to take 30 hours of Continuing Privacy Educations (CPE) per year. This is probably something that I would do voluntarily so it isn’t that many hours. Plus, the IAPP provides various ways to keep one’s membership current and I am already planning on going to some conferences in NYC.

So I want to thank everyone for the help in studying for the exam. I know that some of you are thinking about taking it. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thanks again!

Patrick Romero

  3. Hi Suresh,

I studied from the material that was provided by the IAPP: the CD-ROM and book. The CD-ROM was a video recording of one of their training sessions and it went along with the slides from the video. I would make sure that I know the black-letter law of the various regulations(GLBA, HIPAA, COPPA, etc). Make sure you know who the law applies to and what are the requirements for compliance. As a CISSP, you will not have any difficulty on 3 out of the 5 sections since they are big on technical issues. This is where I need to educate myself some more but your background will be more advantageous than my legal education. If you have any more questions, please e-mail me at promero06@nyls.edu. Good luck!!!

    Hi Patrick,

I passed CIPP exam conducted last month, thanks for your tips it was hlepful. I used full 2 hrs time to complete the exam and as you said some questions where tricky. I started answering questions from chapter 3,4,5 as I was more comfortable with that, then went to 1,2 where I spent more time on.

    Thanks once again.

    Thanks
    Suresh

    Hi Patrick,

I sitting for the CIPP on August 1, 2009. I’ve ordered the books. Now I’m told that I should order the DVD. There is the foundation DVD and the CIPP DVD. As I’m footing the cost I’m a bit relunctant to pay $155 for each DVD unless I can recoup the cost. How did you study please.

    Hello,

I have failed the CIPP exam, and not sure how to prepare for it to improve my success rate. I read that DVD helps, but it is very expensive on the website. Does anyone has a set to sell to me at a discount?

Please let me know if there are more tips for me.

    disappointed tester.

    Hello all,
I am sitting for the exam(s) ? in Nov and need to get study material. I bought the one book they suggest, but am curious if I need the foundation material or other stuff. I also have my CISA and CISM and have been in security for about 12 years so I don’t want to overbuy to study a lot of stuff I already know, but I also hate to be under-prepared. Does anyone have a good idea if this additinal material is needed, and if so, does anyone know what I can get used material. I have to do this on my own (no company budget) so getting the 600.00 dvd’s is a bit out of reach for me.

    Thanks in advance !
    Marc

Hi – I plan to take the exam in early 2010. I would very much like to buy a used copy of the Certification Foundation Training Workshop dvd and study guide. Does anyone have one they’d be willing to sell? Please let me know. Thanks.

    Hey Patrick

I just purchased the IAPP Foundation Companion Course Book + DVD (happy to share with you at a later stage).
The IAPP Foundation Companion Course Bookhas three main sections:
    1. Introduction to Privacy – Common Principles and approaches
    2. Info security – protet and safeguard personal informarion
    3. Online Privacy – Common Principles and approaches

To be honest, I am struggling with section 1 (Introduction to Privacy – Common Principles and approaches).
Do we have to memorise all the slides and its boring/dry law theory type content to pass the Foundation Exam?
Its too confusing and all the laws appear to be the same.

Patrick, what would you say would be the EASIEST and less painful way to prepare for the CIPP Foundation Exam
I dont know what else I can do, any suggestions would really help!

Please email me on lavinde@gmail.com your thoughs or opinions or suggestion in helping me pass the Foundation Exam. Thanks!.
